Testing Your Server's Network Speed with Speedtest-cli on Ubuntu

Due to the many times that people have explained to me that speedtest’s cli application maxes out at 5 Mbps on Upload, I am writing this to remind myself and others of an alternative to test using speedtest.net

This version of speedtest-cli is in python. This supports python versions 2.4 - 3.7.

Step #1: Check to see if python is already installed.

You can check this by running python --version and checking if it responds with Python x.x.x with x being a version number.

If you don’t have python installed, you can install it with the command: sudo apt install python python-pip.

Step #2: Download the speedtest script by sivel.

wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py
# You can check the contents of this file if you do not trust its contents.
chmod +x speedtest-cli

Step #3: Use it.
You can run a speed test just by using the command speedtest-cli.

usage: speedtest-cli [-h] [--no-download] [--no-upload] [--single] [--bytes]
                     [--share] [--simple] [--csv]
                     [--csv-delimiter CSV_DELIMITER] [--csv-header] [--json]
                     [--list] [--server SERVER] [--exclude EXCLUDE]
[--mini MINI] [--source SOURCE] [--timeout TIMEOUT]
                     [--secure] [--no-pre-allocate] [--version]

                        distance
--server SERVER Specify a server ID to test against. Can be supplied
                        multiple times
--exclude EXCLUDE Exclude a server from selection. Can be supplied
                        multiple times
--mini MINI URL of the Speedtest Mini server
--source SOURCE Source IP address to bind to

enabled by default to improve upload performance. To
support systems with insufficient memory, use this

--version Show the version number and exit
